The game progresses when a player from the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball which a player of the batting team tries to hit with the bat. The purpose of the offensive team (batting team) is to hit the ball on the field of play, allowing players to run to the base, giving them an advance-clockwise “run” around the four bases to score four runs.
